Public Works Seminar and Training Session
Then PRM's red concrete mixer truck arrived and the fun began! Paul Palva, of the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, showed the group how to place and screed the concrete; as well as the proper use of the bull float and magnesium float. He demonstrated the proper techniques necessary to cut lines, edge, and apply a broom finish. Paul then turned the group loose to finish the job and the results were amazing!
Nick Squeo, PRM's quality control expert, explained and also demonstrated what is involved with wet testing of concrete in the field. Nick also showed the participants the proper way to cast cylinders, perform an air test and a slump test. He explained why these tests are performed and how they help to ensure the concrete delivered to the site is in compliance with the job specifications.
The final speaker was Bill Toole, also of PRM, who spoke on the basics of concrete. Bill gave a general overview of the basic materials used in the production of a cubic yard of concrete. He explained how admixtures are used to produce workable and durable concrete. Bill also informed the group how admixtures are used to offset not only the effects of cold weather but also hot weather.
This joint venture was a huge success and, we hope, the first of many more similar programs. Just one more instance of PRM Concrete's commitment to furthering education within the Rhode Island Construction Industry.
