Public Works Seminar and Training Session
In 2002 PRM Concrete, The Rhode Island Public Works Association and the city of Cranston sponsored a seminar and training session for public works employees from various municipalities throughout the State. The program consisted of classroom programs as well as the actual placement and finishing of six yards of fiber reinforced concrete.
Art Stenberg of the Massachusetts Concrete and Aggregate Producers Association (MaCAPA) was instrumental in working with Pete Mantia, Nick Squeo and Bill McHale of PRM in organizing the speaking program for this event.
Bill McHale, of PRM Concrete, opened the seminar with a discussion of the proper safety procedures for handling concrete. He emphasized the need to wear proper protective gear when working with ready-mixed concrete. Bill also stressed the importance of preventing wet concrete from coming into contact with bare skin, because of the potential for severe cement burns.
Wayne Tarr, of SI Concrete Systems, followed with a talk on the use of fibers in ready-mixed concrete. He explained the types of fibers available in the marketplace today and also outlined the potential benefits gained by the use of fibers to not only the contractor but also the developer and owner. Wayne gave a very interesting demonstration of how fibrous concrete will hold together even when impacted.
