Kenyon-Shannock Railroad Bridge #149
Replacement

The new bridge, which opened on October 27, 2000, has three spans totaling 100 ft. It has a wooden superstructure (to match its predecessor) made of dowel laminated timber deck panels with wood deck, sidewalks and rails. New protective barriers on either side of the bridge, required by the electrification of the Amtrak railroad underneath, were finished with timber veneer. All work over the Amtrak lines was accomplished from 11 :00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. when traffic was light and electric lines could be shut down.

In order to accommodate the Amtrak electrification, the new bridge design included a change in vertical and horizontal alignment. This meant the new bridge would actually be constructed forty feet from its original location. Because of this, the historic stone abutments had to be replaced. Again due to its historical location and significance, the DOT and the Historical Society began a search to replicate, as closely as possible, the original cut stone abutments and wing walls.

To accomplish this, while maintaining costs, Universal engaged Concrete Resurfacing, Inc., of Shrewsbury, New Jersey, as a subcontractor. Concrete Resurfacing offered a special architectural concrete texture which would match, as closely as possible, the cut stone abutments of the original bridge. To do this, Concrete Resurfacing provided cast-in-place form liners made to shop drawings.

These liners are constructed from a variety of very durable materials with plywood backing strips laminated on the backside of each liner. These liners were secured to the selected forming system with screws through the back of the liner. The Form Liner pattern selected was Random Cut Stone, (14 3/4" coursing). The stone sizes varied from 14" to 4'; and the average relief was 1 3/4". The liners were numbered and lettered to illustrate the shop drawing pattern and came in various sizes all of which were 4" thick.
